General Dog Training FAQs

A dog behaviourist focuses on understanding the root causes of behavioural issues like aggression, anxiety, or fear. While a trainer teaches obedience commands (like sit, stay, come), a behaviourist works on correcting deeper emotional and psychological problems. Often, both roles overlap, but a behaviourist addresses more complex behaviours.

I help with a wide range of behavioural issues, including aggression, anxiety, separation anxiety, excessive barking, destructive chewing, fear of certain objects or people, leash reactivity, resource guarding, and socialisation problems with other dogs or people.

Every dog is unique, and progress depends on the nature of the issue, the dog’s history, and your commitment to the training plan. Some issues may improve after a few sessions, while others may require more time and consistent follow-up at home.

I believe in every dog has their own method of learning. I have a vast knowledge and experience in multiple methods of training and upon meeting the owners and dog will discuss whats the best root to take for the whole team involved. If I was to label my method I would call it Open Minded.

Yes! It’s never too late to modify a dog’s behaviour. While puppies may be more adaptable, older dogs can still learn new habits. With the right techniques and patience, most dogs, regardless of age, can improve their behaviour.

Practical Questions

If your dog is exhibiting more complex emotional problems like aggression, anxiety, or extreme fear, a behaviourist may be the best choice. However, for general obedience issues like pulling on a lead, jumping on people, or basic commands, a trainer might be more appropriate.

Yes, I offer in-home consultations to assess your dog’s behaviour in their natural environment. This is often the best way to understand and address problems. I also offer virtual consultations.

During the initial consultation, I will observe your dog’s behaviour, discuss the challenges you’re facing, and ask questions about your dog’s history. I’ll then create a tailored training plan based on your dog’s specific needs and your goals.

The number of sessions depends on the complexity of the behavioural issue and your dog’s progress. Some dogs may require just a few sessions, while others with deeper issues may need ongoing training over several months.

Yes! Early training and socialisation are crucial for puppies to develop into well-behaved adult dogs. I can assist with basic obedience, house training, and socialising with people, other dogs, and different environments.

Specific Behavioural Issues

Yes, aggression is a serious issue, and I have extensive experience helping dogs overcome reactive and aggressive behaviours. Training will involve identifying triggers, managing the behaviour, and gradually changing how your dog responds to stressful situations.

Absolutely! Separation anxiety can be a challenging problem, but with the right training techniques, we can reduce your dog’s stress when left alone and help them feel more secure.

Resource guarding is a natural behaviour where a dog becomes protective over food, toys, or other objects. I will work on desensitising your dog to the presence of people or other animals around their valued resources and teach them to trust that their things are safe.

Excessive barking can stem from a variety of causes, such as boredom, anxiety, or territorial instincts. I’ll help identify the cause of the barking and develop a plan to modify the behaviour, whether through mental stimulation, exercise, or desensitisation.

Yes! Noise phobia is common in dogs. I use desensitisation and counter-conditioning techniques to help your dog become more comfortable with loud noises and reduce their fear response.
